Seasons in Okinawa

Spring (March – May)
Spring in Okinawa is relatively warm, with temperatures ranging from 20 to 25°C (68–77°F). It warms up earlier than mainland Japan, and this is a calm period before the rainy season and is an excellent time for tourism.
■The condition of the sea
The water temperature is 21 to 22°C(69-72℉), and it still feels a bit chilly. On days when the wind is light and the sun is strong, it is hot like summer, but on days when the north wind blows, it remains a little cold. It is the breeding season for fish, with big cuttlefish being seen in the water. Humpback whales visit the area until about the end of March, so there is a chance to see them from the boat on the way to the diving tour. We also offer whale swims.
Rainy Season (May – Jun)
The rainy season is a significant period in Okinawa. During this time, continuous rainfall is common, and humidity is high. After the rainy season ends, the weather becomes hot and humid. However, since there are fewer tourists, some people prefer visiting during this time.
■The condition of the sea
Diving can be enjoyed even in the rain. During this season, many marine creatures enter their spawning period, and the number of juvenile fish increases. One of the most famous events is the mass spawning of corals. This usually occurs around the spring tide in May and June. On the day following the spawning, egg clusters can be seen floating on the sea surface, forming red streaks. Observing coral spawning during a night dive is a wonderful opportunity. Since the event is only held on limited dates, please contact us in advance.

Summer (July – September)
Okinawa's summer is extremely hot, with temperatures exceeding 30°C (86°F). Beach activities and marine sports are very popular, but it is also typhoon season, so storms can occasionally affect travel plans. The ocean is exceptionally clear, making it the peak season for tourism.
■The condition of the sea
In summer, south winds blow, but they are weak, allowing for a greater variety of dive sites to explore. Not only beautiful coral points, but also Zamami Island and Manza, famous for their terrain, are easy to visit during this season. It is also very nice to jump into the sea from top of a boat in the summer when the sun is strong.
Autumn (October – November)
Autumn in Okinawa is a comfortable season, with temperatures around 25°C (77°F) and lower humidity. The typhoon season ends, and there are more sunny days, making it an ideal time for outdoor activities and sightseeing. It is also the harvest season for various crops, allowing visitors to enjoy fresh local produce.
■The condition of the sea
The summer tourist season is over and it is time to enjoy diving in peace and quiet. Water temperature is still warm but plankton decreases and clarity increases. This is also the time of year when the encounter rate with manta rays increases in the Kerama Islands.

Winter (December – February)
Winter in Okinawa is much milder than in mainland Japan, with minimum temperatures around 10°C (50°F). However, strong northern winds can make it feel colder. There are fewer tourists, but some people visit to escape the harsh winter of mainland Japan and enjoy Okinawa’s warm climate.
■The condition of the sea
In winter, the sea water temperature in Okinawa drops to 21 to 22°C(69-72℉). You can observe many nudibranchs, and from January, you can also see big cuttlefish. You will be surprised when you see a squid over one meter long underwater for the first time. This is a great time of year to visit beautiful sandy points.
And the most famous sight in Okinawa in winter is the humpback whale. Every year at this time, they come from the Bering Sea, 6,000 kilometers away, to breed and raise their young. Not only can you see them on your way to the dive, but you can also see them underwater if you sign up for a Whale Swim tour.
