Diving in Kerama Before the Typhoon: A Day with Divers from Singapore and Switzerland
teriyakidiverzToday, we had young divers joining us from Singapore and Switzerland.
Although they had never met before, it seemed that they quickly became friends simply by diving together and sharing the same underwater world.
Due to the approaching typhoon, we headed for some of the closer islands within Kerama Islands National Park.
Our first dive was on the southern side of Nagannu Island, where extensive fields of branching coral provide a beautiful home for an incredible number of blue-green chromis.
There were so many of these small blue fish that they seemed to fill the entire underwater landscape. Watching them move and dance through the clear blue water was a beautiful reminder of what makes the ocean around Okinawa so special.
For our second dive, we headed to “Labyrinth” at Kamiyama Island.
Just as its name suggests, this dive site is made up of complex rock formations and numerous caves. Swimming through the winding passages and exploring the different openings made it feel like an underwater maze.
Unfortunately, we were only able to see a sea turtle at the surface rather than underwater on this day. However, there was still plenty to enjoy—the colorful coral, the many caves, and the beautiful sandy bottom sparkling as sunlight reached the seafloor.
With the typhoon approaching, our options were limited by the sea conditions. Despite that, we are truly grateful to our guests for enjoying the ocean that was available to us and making the most of the day.
Finding something to enjoy in the conditions we are given is, in our opinion, exactly what makes a great diver.
The ocean is not always calm, and we cannot always choose the dive sites we want. But there is always something special to discover when we take the time to appreciate what the sea offers us that day.
We hope to have the opportunity to dive with these wonderful divers again someday—hopefully under even better conditions!
